Threatening man with knife spared from jail

A man was caught outside a former neighbour's home with a six-inch knife making threats.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard last Thursday how Garry Ayres, 55, of Alder Gardens, Hollingwood, Chesterfield, called police and said he was outside an address in London in November waiting for someone so he could kill him.

Becky Allsop, prosecuting, said the knife was found in a pocket and Ayres complained about drug dealers and continued to make threats. Mrs Allsop added that the neighbour had called at his home asking for money. Ayres pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour. Ayres was sentenced to 18 weeks of custody suspended for 12 months. He must pay an £80 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
