Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Tuesday, June 14, how Jennifer Whiley, 33, of Peasehill, Ripley, stole washing-up liquid, meat and air fresheners after she struck three times at a Co-op store.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “She concealed items and left without paying. She was identified by CCTV and told police she had stolen to fund her drug addiction and to buy food.”

Mrs Allsop added there had been a degree of planning.

Whiley pleaded guilty to the three thefts committed on May 13, 16, and 19.

Defence solicitor Julie Page said: “She accepts the thefts and going into the store to steal after relapsing into drug addiction. Although she’s been out of trouble for four years after previous matters for dishonesty and drug possession she’s been addressing that through drug workers and her GP and was leading a drug-free life. But more recently there were personal difficulties causing depression and a relapse into drug use and she’s in the process of getting back on a prescription to prevent a resumption of a lifestyle reflected by her record.”

Magistrates fined Whiley £80 and she must pay £151.84 in costs, a surcharge and compensation.
