Swanwick Girlguide jets off once in lifetime trip to help Kenyan community

Rebecca Wardle, 18, has joined eight other girls from across the Midlands on the once-in-a-lifetime trip which set off on July 26.

The teen, who is a member of Alfreton senior section and a young leader at 1st Riddings Brownies, will take part in vital community development work.

Throughout the two-week trip, she will be supporting young women attending The Brainhouse Academy – a school based with the slums of Nairobi.

It will provide them with a taste of her guiding experience and sharing new skills.

She is also set to accompany young women from the school on Kenya’s first international camp.

Rebecca, of Swanwick, said: “I am really looking forward to the Kenya trip.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to travel and to experience a culture unlike any I’ve experienced before.

“I have done lots of fundraisers in preparation for the trip, such as a sponsored 24-hour walk which I really enjoyed.

“Girlguiding has enabled me to do so many amazing things, such as this trip, and has allowed for me to meet and make friends with people from a variety of backgrounds.

“I never would have met so many different people and had the chance to see so many things without Girlguiding.”

Rebecca fundraised ahead of her trip by a sponsored walk, bag packing and organised the Brownie and Rainbow Christmas disco.
