Students play ball

Young people have gained a qualification in an unusual sport.

Twenty–one students from Highfields School earned their National Governing Body (NGB) Level One Award for coaching korfball, which promotes ball–handling skills and fitness.

Jayne Allen, Rural Derbyshire’s School Sports Coordinator for the school, said: “The reason we wanted to do this NGB award was that my 21 Sixth Form Sports Leaders will be off to university in the next couple of years and korfball is a fast growing uni sport that both sexes can play together so it’s truly inclusive.

Abbie Akehurst, a year 13 Platinum Level Sports Ambassador from Highfields, said: “It was really good to learn about a different sport.”
