WOMEN are being urged to ‘take on cancer’ by signing up for Chesterfield’s Race for Life this year.

The annual run to boost Cancer Research UK, which saw a sea of pink-wearing ladies fill the town centre last year, takes place on Sunday June 16.

Last year 1,915 local women took part and raised a total of £106,035.

But organisers are hoping to sign up 2,000 women this year to collect £125,000 for vital research.

Sarah Threadgall, Cancer Research UK’s Chesterfield event manager, said: “Women of all shapes, sizes, ages and levels of fitness take part in Race for Life.

“They come from different backgrounds and walks of life but they are united by their absolute determination to take on cancer and beat it.”

Race for Life raises millions of pounds each year to fund life-saving research, such as a national clinic trial involving Chesterfield patients with multiple myeloma.

Mums, grans, sisters and friends will also take part in the town centre event to remember loved ones they lost to the disease.

Sarah added: “We know many women want to take part but are worried about completing the 5k course.

“Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast.

“Taking part is about uniting against a disease that affects all of us. You can walk the route, run it or jog it if you prefer.

“Come on ladies, enter Race for Life in Chesterfield today.

“Together, we can hit cancer where it hurts!”
