Devout Christian Angela Burks, 68, was left covered in blood, suffered a fractured eye socket and bleeding to the brain after being confronted by Lee Greenall on Grange Street, Alfreton in February.

She refused to hand over her handbag and Greenall attacked her, stabbing her with a steak knife 13 times in the head and neck.

But following the conviction, Mrs Burks, who spent three days in hospital, spoke out and said her faith had helped her through.

She said: “I will not now go out in the dark but I’m determined not to let it affect my life.

“I have to maintain some composure in my life.

“I do not hate him and I felt that right from the beginning.

“I put it down to God who has helped me through this.

“I should not really be here in a way, but I’m glad I am.

“I have spoken to other Christians who I worship with and we have discussed the possibility of going to see him in prison.

“I am not going to say for definite that I will do that, but I might, and that is currently only a might.

“I should add that I do not hate him and I don’t want any harm to come to him, but he has a sentence to serve and I believe in full punishment.”

Meanwhile, acting detective sergeant at Derbyshire Police, Adam Gascoigne, who was in court for the sentencing of Greenall said: “It was clearly a frenzied and violent attack and this sentence reflects that.

“We would like to thank Angela for her assistance in the investigation.

“We’d also like to thank the people of Alfreton who helped in the apprehension of the defendant.”
