The money raised by the pupils from year seven of Highfields School, in Matlock, will be split between the Red Cross, RSPCA and four other nominated charities from the school’s house system.

Aeris House, one of Highfields’ four houses, wanted to support the charity First Taste, which delivers stimulating arts programmes to frail, older people in residential and day care in the Derbyshire Dales.

Shirley Davidson, chairman of First Taste, visited the school to accept the £472 cheque and explain how the money students raised will help the charity.

Guided by sixth form students and staff, pupils covered a demanding route of nine miles - taking in the views from Riber Castle, students had a brief lunch at Cromford Meadows before continuing on the journey that landed them safely back at school.

Head of year Mr Rodgers said: “I am very proud of our students.  It wasn’t an easy walk in soaring temperatures, but their positive attitude certainly kept me going.

“Their commitment and the generosity of them and their families is testament to the caring, community spirit of our students.”
