SPIRE JUNIORS: Tea Rooms to sell '˜chocolate concrete' for struggling school

A Chesterfield tea room is raising money for a local children - by selling an old school dinners favourite.

The Tea Rooms in the Olympia House Antique Centre on Brimington Road is to sell chocolate concrete with pink custard for Spire Juniors on Derby Road.

The school was at the centre of a funding row last week which will leave it struggling to keep all its staff and pay for school trips.

On their Facebook page, the Tea Rooms said: “In response to the story about Spire Junior School’s budget cuts and the Year 6 residential trip being in jeopardy, we have decided to make the old school dinners favourite, chocolate concrete.

“We will be selling these nostalgic slabs at £1 or £1.50 with pink custard and donating all money from the sales to the school fund.

“The trip costs £150 per child and this is our target.”

The idea went down a storm with their customers on Facebook.

Alisha Tierney March said: “As a parent of a child at this school can I send our heartfelt thanks, its so nice to see the community pulling together.”

And many had suggestions of other old-fashioned treats they could try, from cornflake cakes to jam roly poly.

One, Jo Bagshawe, said she’d ‘pay any price’ to have school treacle sponge and custard again.
