SNOW PICTURES: Derbyshire braced for hazardous winter weather overnight

The first significant snow of winter 2014 has started falling in parts of Derbyshire – and more is forecast over the next 24 hours.

Members of the public are being urged to take “extra care” by the Met Office, which has issued yellow ‘be aware’ alerts of snow and ice for the county up until noon on Monday.

Snow started falling in Buxton an hour before the Met Office warning officially kicked in at 2pm today.

There are reports of tricky driving conditions in the town.

Twitter user @khargaoasis said Buxton was at a “standstill” after just ten minutes of wintry showers this afternoon.

Other users have taken to social networking sites to complain about a lack of gritting in the area.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Showers will affect the area during Sunday night and into Monday morning, falling increasingly as snow, particularly on high ground. There will be a mixture of rain, hail, sleet and snow to lower levels.

“Accumulating snow may lead to travel disruption on routes over high ground, while icy stretches are likely to form on untreated surfaces.

“The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel during Sunday night and Monday morning.

“The public is advised to take extra care.”

It is the first Met Office snow warning to be issued for Derbyshire so far this winter.

A big chill has enveloped the county since Monday – when winter began in meteorological terms.

And a spell of unsettled and potentially disruptive weather – including gales and snow – could be on the way next week, according to the Met Office.
