Smoke alarm plea after dramatic Chesterfield blaze

Firefighters have reiterated the importance of having working smoke alarms after a blaze in Chesterfield.

Crews rushed to Heaton Court, which provides sheltered housing accommodation, after receiving reports of a sounding smoke alarm at about 8.15pm last night.

Residents had to be evacuated from the building and a man was rescued as firefighters battled a blaze in the kitchen of a ground floor flat.

This morning a Derbyshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “This incident shows how smoke alarms can help save lives and are extremely important.”
