A Polish sex offender who was convicted in Poland but was living in Shirebrook has been reported to have returned to his country after police had unsuccessfully attempted to conceal his identity.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court recently heard how Marcin Jaworski, 20, formerly of Eland Road, Langwith Junction, Shirebrook, was named despite efforts by Derbyshire Constabulary to ban the media from identifying him.

Police had tried to secure Mr Jaworski’s anonymity during their successful application to place him on the Sex Offenders’ Register over fears of unrest in Shirebrook due to the influx of Eastern European residents.

Mr Jaworski’s solicitor Renata Jurenko has stated that Mr Jaworski, of Sylvan Crescent, Sutton, has now returned to Poland after revealing in court this had been his intention after his identity and conviction were revealed.

The court had also heard how Jaworski’s conviction from Poland, in October 2014, involved a sexual assault and not a rape within UK legal terms despite the offence being recorded as a rape under a wider definition in Poland.

Ms Jurenko stated that since Mr Jaworski had been labelled as a rapist by the English and Polish media he had intended to return to Poland.

She added that he had become too frightened to come out of his home.

The court still approved a Sexual Offence Notification Order, on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary, to place Mr Jaworski on the Sex Offenders’ Register until October 2021.

Police admitted the force had been wrong to attempt to conceal Mr Jaworski’s identity but that the move had been well-intentioned given concerns about potential social unrest in Shirebrook.

Superintendent Jim Allen, of Derbyshire Police, said Jaworski’s background had been discovered by patrolling police and he was pleased the order had been granted.
