READERS are snapping up tickets for the Derbyshire Times’ first carol service - so come on and get them while you still can!

Last week we announced plans to host the service at Chesterfield’s glorious Crooked Spire Church - and your response was amazing.

Those who have booked places for the event, at 6.30pm on December 8, are looking forward to spending the evening with special guests including Mayor of Chesterfield Cllr Peter Barr and Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins.

Derbyshire Times Editor Nicola Megson said: “We’re already overwhelmed at the response.

“It’s going to be fantastic and numbers will be limited so we’re encouraging people to order their places as soon as possible so they don’t miss out.” Tickets are free but we will be asking for a donation of £2 on the night which will be split equally between church funds and Chesterfield charity Fairplay which supports families with youngsters with special needs. Nicola added: “It’s been a packed news year with lots of developments and changes and this service will be a great way for us to come together and take stock and celebrate all that is good in our area.”

The service will include hymns and readings from our distinguished guests including Fairplay’s Heather Nicklin.

Derbyshire Times staff will also be attending and will be involved in the service.

Rev Michael Knight, of St Mary and All Saint’s Church, said: “We hope to have a Fairplay display to show all the good work this charity does.”

Tickets will be available (a maximum of four per application) from the Derbyshire Times reception, on Station Road, Chesterfield. Alternatively readers can send a stamped addressed envelope to ‘Carol Service’, Derbyshire Times, Station Road, Chesterfield, S41 7XD detailing how many tickets are required.

The carol service also aims to honour a brave youngster - a Child of Courage.

We are asking readers to nominate a boy or girl they feel deserves to be given pride of place at the event - and to receive a special gift too.

Nominations can be emailed to comment@derbyshiretimes.co.uk with ‘Child of Courage’ in the subject heading or they can be posted to ‘Child of Courage’, Derbyshire Times, Station Road, Chesterfield S41 7XD. Please include contact details.

The closing date is November 18.
