FOUR former councillors have been honoured for their long and eminent service.
June Beckingham, Terry Kendellen, Mick Leverton and, posthumously, Nicky Qazi became honourary aldermen or an alderwoman at Chesterfield Borough Council’s extraordinary council meeting on Friday.
Three were presented with a badge and scroll and signed the roll of honourary aldermen, with their names added to the board displayed in the town hall.
Mr Qazi’s daughter Surriya Falconer received the badge and scroll on behalf of the family.
This new status is the second-highest honour the council can confer after the Freedom of the Borough. There have only been six since the honourary alderman position was created almost 40 years ago and it is the first time an alderwoman has been appointed after a change in legislation allowed councils to confer this title instead of aldermen.
