A landlord says his family have been left terrified after heartless burglars raided his pub stealing charity boxes, Christmas presents for the homeless and a BMW that was parked outside.
John Wray, 50, landlord of The Britannia Inn pub on Old Hall Road in Brampton, found two steak knives embedded in the wall when he went downstairs on Sunday morning.
John, his wife Jodie, 26, and four-year-old son Josh had been asleep upstairs when the raid took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, between 12.30am and 6am. The Rose and Crown, which is opposite, was also raided.
John said: “They prised open the rear entrance to the pub, went into the bar and put two steak knives into the dado rail on the wall. Police said if we’d have come downstairs we would have copped it.
“They (the burglars) had a good scout round, took a cushion cover off a cushion and filled it with cigarettes from behind the bar, £100 of quiz money and charity box money that was for Ashgate Hospice. They then went to the cellar and pinched two bottles of vodka, one bottle of gin and a bottle of Jack Daniels.”
He told how the culprits then took all of the car keys from a key rack and headed to the car park where they stole a BMW belonging to a neighbour.
As an added blow the burglars stole presents from boxes in the kitchen that people had dropped off ready to be donated to the homeless for Christmas.
John said: “I went downstairs at 6am to take the dog for a walk. It took me a few minutes to realise what had happened. I thought what’s all that mess on the floor by the door?
“It has upset Jodie a lot. I get up for work at 4am and for the last few nights she has been lying on the sofa with the little one.”
The nearby Rose and Crown was also raided with items taken including alcohol and charity box money. Entry was made through a fire door.
Landlord Matt Randal called those responsible ‘scum’.
