School bidding to be top of the class

The school has been shortlisted in the ‘Top of the Class’ category which recognises those helping to create a generation of lifesavers, demonstrating exceptional first aid knowledge, equipment and practice.

The St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes Awards, supported by Laerdal Medical, is the charity’s yearly celebration of ordinary people who have taken extraordinary heroic actions to help someone in need.

Each finalist has been nominated for their heroic life saving skills or unstinting commitment to ensuring more lives are saved through first aid.

The star-studded awards in September will be hosted by presenter and musician, Myleene Klass, who also saved her daughter from choking using first aid.

Deputy head teacher Ryan Metters said: “We’re delighted to be shortlisted as first aid skills are very high on the school’s agenda.

“We believe that every young person should have the chance to develop their first aid skills so they are skilled enough to deal with any situation.

“We prioritised first aid training for all students as part of a set of ‘core values’ which the school believe every young person should achieve as part of their education in order to be a responsible citizen in society.

“Earlier this year all 780 students were trained in first aid, which we backed up with a week-long focus on the importance of first aid during assemblies.

“And training is also being provided this summer for the new intake.

“The ability to save a life in school, at home and in the local community can’t be under-estimated.

“It is also a great way for students to build confidence and achieve a crucial life skill.”

The awards ceremony, which will be held on September 7, at The Grange St Paul’s in London, is supported by Laerdal Medical, the creators of CPR mannequin Resusci Anne.

Laerdal Medical and St John Ambulance are working together to help save lives through first aid.
