Over the two days, a total of 52 motorists were stopped for not wearing their seatbelts and 29 drivers were pulled up for using their mobile phones. Three drivers were stopped for speeding, one for not having an MOT, and two vehicles were found to have insecure loads.

Four vehicles were found to be on the road without insurance, and were seized, and one man was arrested in Shirland on suspicion of drink driving.

VOSA issued eight prohibition notices to drivers for defects on vehicles which seriously affect their roadworthiness. The owners then have to have their vehicle inspected at an MOT centre before they can legally drive on the public highway.

HM Revenue and Customs also seized one vehicle after it was being driven on red diesel.

Safer Neighbourhood Team Sergeant Les Rawson said: “Our aim is to remind motorists of their responsibilities behind the wheel, which include making sure that their vehicles are roadworthy, and that they are both safe and legal, so they are not going to put others at risk.

“Road safety is something which affects the whole community and we hope operations like these will help to make the roads safer for everyone.”

Operation Safedrive checks continue to take place throughout the county and the team hope to plan future operations in the area.
