Review: Fatal Encounter at Nottingham Theatre Royal

Tabs Productions have gone to a lot of trouble to create a mid-20th Fatal Encounter, the third in their Classic Thriller season at Nottingham Theatre Royal.

As well as spot-on clothes, décor and hairstyles, there’s incidental music straight out of 1960s TV cop shows, which the play itself also resembles, with short scenes and tense cliffhangers.

The cast of eight is professional and proficient to the core. There’s a wonderfully flamboyant performance from Jacqueline Gilbride as a sophisticated socialite, a delicious cameo from Adrian Lloyd-James as a laidback wide boy, and Andrew Ryan is centre stage as a confused publisher trying to get to the bottom of a mystery that keeps deepening.

Who is the mysterious Mrs Clayton? What’s inside the hidden briefcase? And will the missing letter ever turn up?

It’s edge of the seat stuff, and runs till Saturday, so there’s plenty of time to see it.
