Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on May 23 how Joshua Bennett, 25, was at a wedding celebration at Stancliffe Hall, on Whitworth Road, Darley Dale, Matlock, when he left in his friend’s Range Rover without asking permission.

Prosecuting solicitor Sarah Haslam said the complainant Ryan Thomas is a friend of Bennett’s and they had been at a wedding party at Stancliffe Hall.

Mrs Haslam said: “Ryan Thomas left the party and left the Range Rover with a key in the vehicle for another driver to collect on another day. About ten minutes to midnight the police came across the Range Rover and the vehicle was stopped because it was being driven erratically. This defendant provided Ryan Thomas’ details but later accepted he had provided false details and was arrested.”

Bennett told police that he had taken the car without consent and had attempted to drive the vehicle back to Manchester.

Bennett, of Broad Oak Lane, Manchester, pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and taking the Range Rover without the owner’s consent after the incident on the A6, at Darley Dale, on April 11.

Defence solicitor John Wilford said: “Mr Bennett had been at a wedding and the owner of the vehicle left the car and he left it unsecured with the keys. Mr Bennett got in the car with a passenger and they decided to go back to Manchester and back to the person who owns the vehicle. Mr Bennett is remorseful. He says made a big mistake.”

Bennett was fined £370 and ordered to pay a £37 victim surcharge and £85 costs. His licence was also endorsed with six points.
