Report highlights increase in sex offenders in county

There are now more than 900 registered sex offenders in Derbyshire, according to a report.

The Derbyshire police study shows the total has increased by 60 over the last year.

The report highlights work undertaken through Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) to protect individuals and communities from the risks posed by dangerous offenders.

Karl Smethem, Derbyshire police’s assistant chief constable, said: “Safeguarding the public from violent and sexual crime continues to be of the highest priority for agencies across the county.

“Working together through MAPPA to manage offenders convicted of such crimes is vitally important.

“The crimes these offenders are responsible for greatly affect the lives of victims, their friends and families and can in turn cause fear in local communities.

“We recognise the public’s concern about people who may present a risk of causing significant harm and we believe that MAPPA provides the best possible framework for these people.”
