Pupils hit all the right notes at theatre show

The annual event aimed at the lower school years seven and eight, gives students something to work towards as they dedicate themselves to extra curricular clubs each week.

It has also offered younger students the opportunity to build their confidence and perform with friends. The first show of the evening was a mini-musical based on Matilda.

The Matilda cast was made up of 30 year seven and eight students. Year seven student Charlotte Diggle starred as Matilda with her strong vocal performance and engaging stage presence. Starring alongside her as Mrs Trunchbull was fellow year seven student Charlotte Rodgers. Isla Restrick was a wonderful, friendly Miss Honey and showcased a beautiful singing voice, whilst Jamie Smith stormed the stage as chocolate cake fanatic Bruce Bogtrotter. 

Another special mention went to the incredibly funny Mrs Wormwood played by the very talented Maria Theakston and Cailean Tuite as Matilda’s dad who also gave a confident performance, as did Annabelle Walker as kind and caring librarian Mrs Phelps.

As well as the mini musical, the evening provided the opportunity to enjoy the work of another 65 pupils from upper school drama club, musical theatre club and A-level and GCSE drama class work.

Stand out performances included year 12 student Sam Halls, who sang Stars from the hugely popular Les Miserables. Also year 11 student Nina Durbridge who showcased a self-written monologue about the Hillsborough disaster. Year 12 student Beth Harrison sang as Mrs Johnstone from Blood Brothers. 

Head of drama Emily Bonsall, said: “The evening created a real buzz around the school and I was so impressed with the talent and commitment displayed by our students. I hope to see all of these pupils performing again in the next school production.”
