The Wheatsheaf Inn, at Newbold, Chesterfield, which hosts weekly quizzes in aid of the Chesterfield-based charity handed over a donation for £750 bringing the total raised over the last few years by the pub to £3,500.

Wheatsheaf Quizmaster Eric Hall said: “The regulars at our quiz donate every single week of the year culminating in a special charity evening every twelve months.

“On that evening they donate prizes and then pay for the privilege of winning them back. It’s crazy, but a good night is had by all. I’d like to take this opportunity of thanking them all for their generosity – the same people are dipping into their pockets week in, week out.

“This year our total was boosted by a donation from the good people of Heath, who also held a quiz to raise funds recently.”

Ashgate is an independent charity which provides specialist palliative and end of life care to seriously ill people and their families across North Derbyshire and in the High Peak and Dales.

It has 21 inpatient beds and a 16-place day unit as well as providing a range of community based support and therapy services.

To ensure these vital services continue, Ashgate Hospice needs to raise £3.8million each year in running costs.

All of the proceeds from the event will go towards ensuring that the hospice’s specialist services continue to be provided to local people in the county.

Chief Executive Lucy Nickson, of Ashgate Hospice, said: “It’s fantastic that they continue to support our work.

“Without them, and people like them, we wouldn’t be where we are today, making such a positive difference to patients and families across North Derbyshire.

“It costs around £10,400 per day to run the hospice, so every penny raised really does help us to deliver care to local people.”
