£12million hotel planned for Bakewell

Developers have unveiled plans for a £12million four-star hotel with up to 120 bedrooms in Bakewell.

White Griffin Management Services, of Bakewell, has yet to request planning permission for the site off Coombs Road from the Peak District National Park Authority but presented the proposal to the town council recently.

The plans, dubbed Project Wye, relate to the land adjacent to the new £8million 60-bed Brooklands Christian residential home for the elderly which was granted consent in 2011.

The development would create 65 full time jobs and increase the average tourist spend in Bakewell by an estimated £1.5 million per annum.

White Griffin hope the hotel would also slow the trend of second home ownership and holiday lets in the town, which would provide greater opportunity for people to buy homes in Bakewell.

It would also provide jobs for the 90 new social households currently being planned for.

In a presentation to the Bakewell Partnership, Robert Kirkwood, owner of White Griffin, said: “The Brooklands site offers the best scalable site within close proximity to the town centre, whilst being outside the conservation area.

“We seek the support of Bakewell including its residents, societies, businesses and leaders.

“We wish to commence construction this year to tie in with the construction of the new care home to minimise disruption to the current residents of the Brooklands care home, our neighbours and the town as a whole.”
