Polls have opened today (February 5) in Brimington, Tapton and Hollingwood after the death of a well-respected county councillor forced a by-election in the ward.
The by-election was called following the death of Walter Burrows in October last year.
The former miner represented Brimington on Derbyshire County Council for 21 years.
He was a member of the Labour Party for 50 years, before passing away at the age of 80 in October.
The candidates are John Edward Ahern – Lib Dem, Mick Bagshaw – Independent, Tricia Gilby – Labour, Lewis Mark Preston – Conservative and Paul Christopher Stone – UKIP.
Returning officer Huw Bowen said: “This is their opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote and decide who they want to represent them on the county council for the next two years.”
