Chesterfield Borough Council named as one of England's top 100 apprenticeship employers by Government

Chesterfield Borough Council has been named as one of the top 100 apprenticeship employers in England in a Government survey.

The council placed 82nd in the list, which ranks the nation’s largest apprenticeship employers according to the success of their programmes over the past 12 months.

The council, which currently employs more than 40 apprentices, was one of just one of nine local government organisations to feature in the top 100.

Councillor Jean Innes, cabinet member for business transformation and customers, said: “I’m delighted that we have been recognised in this way for the work we do with apprentices.

"We were the first town in the UK to declare itself an ‘apprentice town’ and we are committed to ensuring that people in Chesterfield can build the skills and careers they want. This is key to ensuring the borough thrives.”

She added: “We want Chesterfield to be a town where young people, businesses and parents think apprenticeship first. The council has to lead by example.”

The pioneering apprentice town initiative was launched in 2017 in partnership with Destination Chesterfield, the local business community, and apprenticeship providers.

Council apprentices work in almost every service area, including project management, legal and commercial services, and the scheme is seen as an investment in the council’s future workforce.
