Policeask for more help in combatting crime

The local Safer Neighbourhood policing team hopes to encourage residents to come forward with information to Crimestoppers by raising awareness of the organisation and how it works.

Crimestoppers is an independent charity set up to help locate criminals and solve crimes. They operate an anonymous phone number, 0800 555 111, which people can call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to pass on information about crime.

Alternatively people can send information to Crimestoppers anonymously through their website. You don’t have to give your name or any of your personal details and they do not trace calls or track IP addresses.

The information is then passed on to the police after it has been thoroughly checked by their team to ensure there is no way in which a person’s identity could be linked.

PC Sarah Godber of the North Wingfield, Pilsley, Stonebroom and Shirland Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Often people don’t want to come to us with information, as they are worried that their identity would be revealed.

“That’s why we want to let people know more about Crimestoppers. This charity provides an invaluable service by helping us keep the community safe. It gives people with information about criminal activity an opportunity to pass it on, without living in fear of the consequences.”

Rewards are also available in those cases where information leads to an arrest and charge.
