National figures have recently been published and show that more than 680 people have been arrested on suspicion of accessing indecent images of children online in the past nine months. As a result of the operation nearly 400 children have been safeguarded.

Martyn Bates, assistant chief constable, said: “Protecting children is a priority for Derbyshire. We have a dedicated team that targets purely those who we suspect of accessing and sharing indecent images of children over the internet.

“The NCA provides us with the technology to identify suspected offenders and we relentlessly pursue every single one.

“We take a very proactive approach to this type of crime because behind every image is a child victim.

“It is essential to try and prevent this type of crime happening in the first place. We do that by providing education and awareness to stop children becoming victims. Also we need to educate people to spot the signs of abuse and encourage early reporting to the police and other agencies.”
