Police stop 81 vehicles in Darley Dale

Safer neighbourhood officers carried out a day of checks on Dale Road North, in Darley Dale, offering advice to drivers and issuing fines to those caught committing motoring offences.

As a result, 81 motorists were stopped for a number of offences including faulty vehicle lights, defective tyres, and speeding during the Operation Safedrive event on Friday, March 20.

During the day of checks, 31 drivers received fixed penalty notices for not wearing a seatbelt, ten motorists were also fined for using a mobile phone at the wheel and one vehicle was seized as it was not insured.

Nine vehicles were also found to have serious defects which stopped the driver from continuing with their journey without repair or recovery of the vehicle.

Sergeant Andy Wordsworth said: “Operation Safedrive events are all about advising motorists to help improve the safety of our roads for all users and pedestrians.

“Although the majority of drivers went on without a problem, it was concerning to see the number of people not wearing a seatbelt or using their phones while driving, and therefore putting the lives of others at risk.”

The policing team worked alongside the Casualty Reduction and Enforcement Support Team, Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, HM Revenue and Customs, and the Roads Policing Unit.
