Police are probing a burglary at the former Chesterfield Hotel.

Officers attended the Malkin Street site after reciving reports of “suspicious activity” there at about 1pm today.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: “Someone was trying to break in – there’s a smashed window.

“The offender had fled by the time we got there.

“We’re treating it as a burglary in progress.”

Well-known Chesterfield Hotel – which was a major employer and social venue in the town since 1877 – closed on January 31, resulting in 45 job losses.

Removal men were seen at the site last week.

It is understood the hotel owners are currently considering what to do with the building.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the burglary should call Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
