Police officers across Chesterfield unite with youngsters for Anti-Bullying Week

Officers across the Chesterfield area have visited local youngsters to chat about bullying during a national week of action to tackle the issue.

Anti-Bullying Week, coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, took place from Monday 16 to Friday 20 November, with a theme of ‘make a noise about bullying.’

PC Emma Govern and PCSO Janis Naylor from the Dunston, Moor and St Helen’s Safer Neighbourhood Team visited Cavendish Junior School on Monday, November 16 to offer their support to the campaign.

Officers showcased a DVD on cyber bullying during the school’s morning assembly. They then hosted a question and answer session with pupils to discuss issues and offer advice and support.

PC Bronwen Walton from the Clay Cross beat met children at Holmgate Primary and Nursery School on Tuesday, November 17. She hosted a talk around bullying and spoke to youngsters about the impact that it may have on people’s lives.

PCSO Anna Kelsey from the Hollingwood, Inkersall and Duckmanton team visited Duckmanton Primary School on Thursday, November 19 to speak to pupils about the subject.

Temporary Sergeant Neil Hopwell and PCSO John Midgley from the Kilburn beat were keen to raise awareness of bullying via social media. They took to their team Twitter account to offer advice, information and support to victims of bullying, teachers, parents and carers.

Officers also signposted followers in the right direction of partnership agencies that offer confidential help and guidance around bullying.

The aims of this year’s Anti-Bullying Week included to empower children and young people to make a noise about bullying; to help parents and carers have conversations with their children about the issue and to equip teachers to respond effectively when children tell them they are being bullied.
