Plea to dog owners after sheep killed

A Matlock farmer is urging dog owners to “act responsibly” around livestock this lambing season after his flock of sheep were viciously attacked.

Tim Sidaway, of Garden Farm, Riber, issues his plea in the wake of a dog attack last week which left one sheep dead and others seriously injured.

He is now urging dog owners to keep their pets on a short lead when passing livestock – especially during the breeding season.

Tim said: “A ewe costs around £150 and if they are pregnant with lambs, you could be looking at triple that.”

He also warns that, even if dogs chase livestock and do not actually attack, the shock can still cause complications which may lead to them losing offspring.

People just need to act responsibly around livestock,” said Tim.

“Even if people think their dog wouldn’t harm an animal – is it really worth the risk? This is peoples livelihoods after all.”

Tim’s warning has also been echoed by the Peak District National Park Authority who are reminding pet-owners that by law, they must keep their dogs under control.

Area manager Andy Farmer said: “We are happy to see people walking their dogs in the countryside but ask them to keep their pets on short leads until July 31.”
