A planning application has been submitted to planning authority Bolsover District Council for a three story extension to the existing nursing home, creating 44 more supported living units.

The application includes space for 11 more car parking spaces, bring the total of spaces to 39.

The 44 units will be assisted living for retirees who want to keep their independence, but still have support close by.

The planned extension will cover a total floor space 2,168 square metres, and will be located to the South side of the existing building.

The site is currently occupied by a two storey Victorian brick built period property which has been extended with single storey additions to create a residential care home.

An access statement for the extension says: "The proposal will create employment for local people and could also provide a social point or outlet for the elderly residents of South Normanton as well as the residents of the home and retirement accommodation.

"The proposal is an extension to an already successful and established business and will hopefully facilitate its continued prosperity within the area.

"The proposal will provide individual accommodation for senior members of the community who wish to downsize, move to a more socially based environment or have the reassurance of a care network if ever it is needed.

"Normanton Lodge currently functions as a residential care home for the elderly and our client wishes to expand the business by diversifying into providing retirement accommodation for senior members of the community who wish to have their own residential unit with associated support network but wish to maintain their independence.

"The site has been the subject of a previous planning application to extend the existing care home to create a 40 bed nursing home.

"This was granted permission in September 2006.

"Since permission was granted our client has reviewed the development and decided that individual retirement units would be more appropriate for the area and would fit better into his strategy for future business progression.
