Pioneering pub gears up for cyclists needs

Derbyshire’s first community-owned pub has geared-up to a growing gap in the market by adding a cycling hub to its growing list of amenities.

The Anglers Rest, in Bamford, was bought by villagers in 2014 after a community share offer raised more than £260,000. It also boasts a café and Post Office, and is jointly owned by more than 300  people.

The cycling hub was built with the help of an £11,000 grant from the Peak District National Park Authority.

Sally Soady, one of the directors at the Anglers Rest, said: “Our café is a perfect place to stop off for tea and cakes and, although we expected most of the customers to be mountain bikers, we have been surprised by how many road cyclists have visited.”

“We had someone who stopped recently because they had a problem with their bike and they knew we had the facilities to help get them back on the road. As more people get to hear about that we have to offer through word-of-mouth, we hope it will prove to be popular with visitors and local residents.”
