The branch, based in Spital Lane, has had to cancel numerous fundraising activities due to coronavirus restrictions this year – including the annual Christmas Fair which would normally be held at Hasland Village Hall.

This has had an adverse financial impact on the centre which rescues, rehomes and rehabilitates more than 600 animals each year.

But branch staff are determined not to let the plans for Christmas be ruined and are hosting a virtual event where supporters are encouraged to do some festive shopping from the comfort of their own home.

Running all this week until Sunday, December 6, there will be a number of virtual stalls selling a wide variety of items on Facebook from handmade gifts to pet accessories and much more to promote their products and special offers.

Steph McCawley, supporter engagement officer at the RSPCA branch, said: “This is a completely new thing for us and like everything this year so far we have been forced to look at new ways to engage with our community and most importantly raise much need funds for the animals in our care now and over the Christmas period.

“Going virtual seemed like a great idea and we have had a great response from our regular stall holders who would normally support us at this event and all stalls are now taken.

“There will be some gorgeous, handcrafted items which will make wonderful Christmas presents as well as our own stalls for you to browse around virtually.

"Sadly, there won’t be any tombolas but there will be raffle tickets on sale until the end of the year for a chance to win some wonderful prizes from pet hampers, chocolate hampers and an experience day.

"There is also a chance to order the RSPCA 2021 calendar, Christmas cards and diaries.”

The event is being solely held on Facebook here.
