Pictures as Chesterfield begins life in tier 1 lockdown restrictions

Chesterfield residents are getting used to the latest changes to Covid-19 rules after the town was placed in the lower tier of ‘medium’ restrictions.

The town's Labour MP Toby Perkins says he understands many residents will be concerned that restrictions could quickly be escalated – with the town ‘surrounded’ by areas in the second tier like South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and High Peak.

Coun Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Everyone across the town and borough has pulled together to help protect the most vulnerable in our communities over the past seven months.

“But in spite of these efforts, the number of local coronavirus cases is now a cause for concern. The infection rate is too high, and we must jointly consider what further measures may be needed at this critical time.”

For now, Chesterfield residents must continue to follow the rule of six when meeting people indoors or outdoors and pubs and restaurants must close at 10pm.
