More cameras demanded on Chesterfield road following latest collision which led to woman's death

A 60-year-old Chesterfield woman died after being hit by a black Fiat Panda on Wednesday at the pedestrian crossing on Derby Road close to the junction with Redvers Buller Road.

Andrew McKinley, 65, who has lived on the road for 38 years, was seriously injured in December 2014 when he was struck by an 82-year-old driver at a pelican crossing, who was later fined for driving without due care.

The lifelong Chesterfield resident said: “I had just stepped out and this guy came through at a rate of knots and hit me with great force that I somersaulted three times over the bonnet.

"It was a good rate of knots because it smashed his windscreen and dented all his bonnet.”

Andrew sustained seven fractures to his right leg, which doctors at Chesterfield Royal Hospital considered amputating, he said.

He also suffered severe bruising, head injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The former civil engineering worker, who claimed he was left bed-ridden for six months and forced to take early retirement, added: “I’m lucky to be alive.

"I’m now waiting for a hip replacement on my right hand side [because of the collision]. This hasn’t helped matters, hearing about this accident yesterday.”

Andrew said he has previously contacted Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins and Derbyshire County Council to call for more safety measures on Derby Road without success.

He said: “All we get is cameras cost money. What price is it for a life?

"I was very lucky but I’m still suffering the effects six years later and always will do for the rest of my life.”

Andrew, who has been married to Margaret, 62, for 38 years, added: “It needs cameras on that whole stretch of road.

"I’m devastated about it [Wednesday’s fatal collision]. My heart goes out to this woman’s family.”

A spokesperson for Derbyshire County Council said: “We were sorry to hear about the accident on Derby Road and our thoughts are with the friends and family of those involved.

“The police will be preparing a report about the accident which will look at the cause of this tragic incident.”
