Under new Government rules, workers who cannot work from home should travel to work if their workplace is open from Wednesday.

James Eaden, president of Chesterfield Trades Union Council (TUC), said: “To actively encourage workers to return to locked down workplaces is grossly irresponsible.

Workers should only be returning to work if and when clear and precise measures are taken to ensure rigorous safety both in the work place and on public transport.

“That includes strict social distancing measures and access to adequate personal protective equipment.”

The TUC also raised concerns about plans to reopen some primary schools from June 1.

Mr Eaden added: “At our most recent consultation meeting for workplace reps across North Derbyshire last week we heard from unions representing teachers and support staff about their concerns.

“The Prime Minister’s statement last night has only heightened those fears.

“Section 44 of the 1996 Employment Rights Act states that employees have a right to refuse to work if they reasonably believe it puts them or anyone else in serious and imminent danger – and not to suffer detriment (for example, loss of pay) for doing so.

“Our message to workers today is that if you feel that you are being pressurised to work in circumstances that you feel are unsafe then get in contact with your work colleagues; know your rights and look up information about Section 44 of the 1996 Employment Rights Act; contact your union representative; if you are not in a union then join one.”
