Chesterfield residents speak out over petition calling for driving instructors to have the power to pass pupils unable to take tests

A new petition calling for just that has been signed by over 40,000 people countrywide.

So, we decided to find out the views of Chesterfield people and put this question to our readers on Facebook ‘should driving instructors be able to pass their students?’

Out of the 28 people that commented a yes or no answer on our post, 18 disagreed with the petition – 69 per cent.

Many of those who do not think that driving instructors should have this new power thought so due to the danger of new drivers on roads.

Kate Grace Isla, said: “No, because it puts undue stress on the driving instructor.”

Malcolm Bond, said: “No chance. The roads are bad enough these days.”

However eight people agreed with the idea – many of who are currently attempting to pass their driving test.

This was 31 per cent of the overall vote.

Rich Ellis said: “It’s ridiculous that they can’t all ready, there is a 4-6 month wait at the moment and if they fail got to wait that time again.”

Michelle Boler, said: “The driving instructor will know when they’re ready for they’re test so why not?”

Some readers offered alternative suggestions.

Angie Burns said: “I do think tests should be opened up for key workers, ie care workers and nurses, they work long hard shifts, unsocial hrs so need to be able to drive themselves home.”

Jesney Michael Tracey, said: “The theory test needs looking at, I believe you have to pass your driving test within 12 months of passing your theory.“A lot will be running out of date due to practical tests being cancelled, they need an extension putting on them.”
