The colourful event - which included a march through the town centre, music and stalls - this year had a Brazillian theme based around the invitation of Julia Felmanas, of the Brazil Solidarity Initiative, who was among the speakers to address crowds at the end of the parade. Chesterfield hosts the most prestigious May Day gala in the country - held every year since May Day became a bank holiday in 1978.

Youth climate change activist Jenall Waddington kicked off the speeches before the march. Pictures by Anne Shelley.
USDAW rep Cameron Mitchell, from Shirebrook, spoke up for the youth of today.
