500 extra spaces available for Ashgate Hospicecare's Sparkle Night Walk across Chesterfield - with mum to take part in husband's memory

Kimberley Greaves will be walking the charity night-time event, along with 2,000 participants, as it makes its return as a physical event on September 25 to raise money for Ashgate, which provided “exceptional” care cared for her husband Andrew.

She will be joined by family and friends for the fundraiser which they will walk in tribute to the father-of-two from Chesterfield who worked as a roofer.

Andrew Greaves died three-and-a-half years after being diagnosed with bladder cancer in March, aged 44-years-old.

Kimberley said: “I’ll never forget the time I had a very difficult conversation with our children before bringing them both in to see their dad for the last time.

"The hospice was fantastic, and they even arranged to move Andrew to a larger room, so the children had more space to sit down at a table, if they wished to.

“I am so grateful for those last days we had together at the hospice.

"Despite some of our conversations being incredibly hard, we had each other.

"We talked about a future without Andrew, we arranged the funeral, we cried, and we held hands.

“It’s only been a few months since Andrew passed and already the kids and I are being incredibly supported by Ashgate.

"I worry immensely about the lasting effect losing their dad will have on the children for a lifetime.

"I know now that the hospice will be there to support us for as long as we need them.”

The 10km walk across Chesterfield will start at 10pm now due to a clash with a rearranged football match at Chesterfield Football Club.

There are an extra 500 spaces available at the Sparkle Night Walk, with staggered start times from the Technique Stadium, as well as a one-way system and marshals on-hand to ensure the event is in accordance with government guidance.

Walkers will start at the Spireites home ground, going down the A61 bypass, past the iconic Crooked Spire and through the town before finishing back at the stadium.

Residents are being encouraged to take part in the fundraiser which raises money for the hospice’s palliative care.

Savannah Redhead, Ashgate’s events fundraiser, added: “I’m so glad we were and continue to be there for Andrew’s family before and after he sadly died earlier this year.

“To see Kimberley signing up to take part in our Sparkle Night Walk in his memory is lovely, and we can’t thank her enough for the support.

"It’s thanks to fundraisers like her that we’re able to provide care for the families who need us most.”

Kimberley continued: “I will be eternally grateful for how Ashgate took care of my husband and the father of my children at the end of his life.

“The hospice means so much to me and I am so grateful to get the opportunity to give back by taking part in the Sparkle Night Walk.

“Every time I mention the event to my friends and family, more and more people sign up. I can’t wait to unite with friends and family for Ashgate Hospicecare. ”
