PENTRICH: WI welcomes Barbara Daykin to talk about her MBE for services to education

A meeting of Pentrich WI was held in the Village Hall.

The guest speaker Mrs Barbara Daykin gave a very entertaining talk about her life and the circumstances which led to her being awarded the MBE for services to education in Derbyshire. On leaving school she worked for the Derby Evening Telegraph and then Derby Cables. She was elected on to Morley Parish Council and volunteered to be a temporary lollipop lady for Morley Primary School. Bsrbara then took on the duties of caretaker and after 20 years of ‘lollipopping and caretaking’ was asked if she would go into the classroom and listen to readers. She finished up working five days a week and running extra-curricular activities, like a bird club and giving nature talks.

Barbara told members of her preparations and journey to London in a limousine for the investiture ceremony, which was followed by a private party at Morley Hayes.

After refreshments the business meeting was held. The Eve Appeal was rescheduled for May 17.

Details of the May meeting, which is Pate, Poems and Plonk, were given.
