Peak cyclists take on 9,000 mile bike ride for charity

Two cyclists are embarking on a gruelling 9,000 mile journey across nine countries to highlight the plight of some of the world’s poorest people.

David Cook and Paul Cave, of Baslow, will be part of a five–strong team cycling from Singapore to Mumbai though Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal and India.

David, 23, is an experienced long distance cyclist and will be leading the team.

He said: “It is going to be a tremendous challenge but we have been planning this expedition for some time and are confident we shall succeed.”

They will be documenting their journey on film to show people what life is like in South East Asia, as well as raising funds for UNICEF and the Rotary Club of Wirksworth’s Aquabox project.

“The expedition will give us a unique opportunity to raise money for Aquabox and help to promote positively the work of some charities whose humanitarian activities often go unnoticed,” Dave added. “We know the expedition will not be easy. Having to cycle up to 120 miles per day in temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius and fully–saturated air will definitely be tough.”
