Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday, June 2, how Derek Pollard, 77, of Marston Avenue, Meden Vale, near Shirebrook, crashed into the cottage on Hardstoft Road, Pilsley, causing an estimated £5,000 of damage.

Prosecuting solicitor Angela Hadfield said: “Mr Pollard was driving a VW Caddie and came to a junction on Hardstoft Road and went across into the cottage’s conservatory and there was a large crack left in the rear of the property with the cost of damage estimated at £5,000. All parties are believed to have been insured.”

Mr Pollard pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention after the accident on January 12.

He said: “I tried to brake but nothing happened and I collided with the cottage. I was driving at 30mph and it started to rain heavily. I always travel that way from Pilsley and I know the junction and at the time there was a frost alert and perhaps I should have taken more notice.”

Pollard told the court how he injured his knee and bruised an arm and he was hospitalised after the accident.

District Judge Andrew Davison accepted the accident was down to a lapse of concentration and bad road conditions and chose not to disqualify Pollard from driving. However, District Judge Davison fined Pollard £130, ordered him to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £35 costs and imposed four points on his licence.
