It was two years ago, on December 5, since the sale of Tapton House to developer Stonecastle Developments was announced, and their plans to turn the house into 15 flats, then demolish the old school buildings and build numerous town houses.

This makes it clear to me and many others that our local Labour-led council care nothing for our amazing historical buildings. In stark contrast, Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated recently, during Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament, that he supports protecting these buildings for community use. He went on to say that funding was available from National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England, all very positive. Perhaps decision makers at Chesterfield Borough Council should listen to their leader on this occasion and U-turn any sale of Tapton House, keeping the much-loved building for residents locally and nationally to enjoy, the very reason it was gifted to the council to ensure this would happen. It's still empty two years after the announced sale. It could have received funding and be well under way by now, in community use.
