When I was in business, we used to say: 'If you fail to plan then you plan to fail.' I feel this was true of the Royal Mail on the run-up to Christmas.

This festive time comes around every year, therefore it is obvious you should have a well-tested plan in place, like retail generally has.

I have complained twice very recently: letters with a first class stamp have taken a week to reach me, and documents vital to my campaign work have also been delayed by a week. The Royal Mail has now been sold off to a Czech billionaire with approval from both unions and the Government. We know that there are already plans to end the Saturday post and also to end the universal agreement.

The cost of a first class stamp is already too much but it is likely to increase again soon. This will mean less and less letters will be sent, less and less cards, and so the greeting cards trade will suffer, and so will Royal Mail, as people move to texts, e-mails and social media. They say that as you get older, you do see the past with rose-tinted glasses (I am 68) - but I do remember the days when we had a Sunday delivery and until very recently we did get post on all the other days. Society seems to be progressing in the wrong direction, to poorer services at greater cost. What do other readers think?
