The decision by Chesterfield Borough Council to scrap the traditional Santa’s Grotto in the Market Hall and replace it with a walkabout Santa experience feels like a misstep, dampening the festive spirit in the name of cost-cutting.

While Councillor Kate Sarvent points to a host of other events and activities, the absence of a central, magical grotto robs the town centre of a long-standing tradition cherished by local families.

The walkabout Santa, while free, cannot replace the wonder and excitement of visiting a decorated grotto, a highlight for children that creates lasting memories. Instead, this move feels akin to something Ebenezer Scrooge might have endorsed – a penny-pinching approach at the expense of festive joy.

While it is commendable that alternative events, such as the Santa Cruises and Christmas Lights Switch On, are being promoted, these activities do not address the unique appeal of a traditional grotto. The council’s emphasis on cost-cutting misses an opportunity to invest in something that brings the community together and reinforces the town’s identity.

In future, the council should prioritise public input and consider creative funding solutions to preserve traditions that matter to residents. Christmas is a time for generosity and community, not a season for scrimping on joy.
