I would be grateful if you would allow me the right of reply to my critic Graham Barnett (Derbyshire Times letter, January 9 edition).

Graham seems to either not acknowledge or chooses to ignore the fact that the Tories are the party for the rich, by the rich. It appears that he has forgotten that Labour was elected with a landslide majority, which in theory means they could effectively tackle the gross inequality in Britain without opposition. Labour is supposed to be politically diametrically opposite to the Tories. This means they are supposed to be the party for the people of the people. Instead of increasing taxation by 1.6 per cent for millionaires (which would have raised £10 billion of income) they chose to attack pensioners. This despite MPs getting a heating allowance for their second homes! They also chose to attack the people who work in all conditions to grow our food. Some farmers may have farms worth millions, but this doesn't necessarily mean these people are millionaires. They have raised taxes on private schools, but I would ask how many ordinary people can afford to send their children to private schools. That is the only way they have attempted to tackle this particular part of social inequality. Labour have voted against an enquiry into a public review of child sex exploitation because they are frightened of a backlash. They have voted against justice for the Waspi women. They have done nothing about our green land being used for private housebuilding. In the election of the Labour Party, ordinary people expected change for the better. I have yet to see this change! There is only one party who have the policies to tackle the gross and obscene inequalities in Britain and that is the Green Party.
