Stagecoach have recently been in the news for their big increase in profits. Their operating profits are up by a third to £97.3 million in the year to April 2024.

This kind of money should be reinvested in the services to make them more regular, reliable, and to run when and where we want them!In Keir Starmer's recent speech was the Better Buses bill, which will make franchising the norm for bus services and put us on the road to public control: a service for people, not profit.

We at the National Pensioners’ Convention (NPC) advocate that we all push Labour to act on this promise as soon as possible. The policy was adopted by Labour from our manifesto.

Bus usage is now said to have almost returned to pre-Covid levels: private bus companies have consistently claimed people are choosing not to use buses and claim that is why they have had to 'adjust' and reduce services. However, as the Daily Mail reported on August 12, 'passengers return to buses', so no excuses!

"Already there are driver shortages, and, without drivers, services cannot grow and improve. More buses and more jobs can only be good for people and the country.""Already there are driver shortages, and, without drivers, services cannot grow and improve. In tandem with more buses, investment needs to be made now so people can be trained to be bus drivers and meet the increasing demand.Already there are driver shortages, and, without drivers, services cannot grow and improve. More buses and more jobs can only be good for people and the country.
