Letter: It'll take time for Government to sort out mess they were left with

After 14 years of austerity, the slashing of public services and mismanagement of the economy (Liz Truss anyone?) it is going to take time to put things right.
Take the changes to winter fuel allowances. It is now means tested. We all agree that it is important that pensioners are able to keep warm in the winter. However, I do think that the 2.7 million pensioners who pay 40 per cent tax and earn over £50,270 a year and the 500,000 who pay 45 per cent tax and earn over £125,000 a year, may be able to heat their homes without it. It is far better to target support for pensioners on low incomes.

Hide AdThe Government has added £1 billion to the housing support fund to support people on low incomes. Derbyshire County Council received £5,404,080 of this money and could use it to support pensioners just above the pension credit limit, who are most affected by this change. Manchester councils are doing this and I think the Conservative-controlled DCC should be doing this as well. Maybe we should contact Conservative councillors to ask them to help us older people for once. It would make a change from DCC closing care homes and cutting support for social care.
