LETTER: Think how much could have been saved by council

It was certainly good news to read a recent article regarding the new contract for Derbyshire County Council vans.

It claims, quite rightly that there will be a £500,000 saving of taxpayers’ money over the coming years. But why now?
Apparently this idea of having white vans rather than bright orange was suggested years ago and rejected. Think of the money we could have saved.
Equally, was there no possibility of buying a British van, built in the UK, rather than French Citroens? Was the market explored? Can you imagine the French local authorities using British vehicles?

Non monsieur.
Just to add ‘further food for thought’, we have Citroen dealerships and vehicle leasing companies employing many hundreds of Derbyshire workers and paying business rates to town and county councils, so why is a lease company in Scotland preferred? Did we ask the companies of Derbyshire to quote?
Well done DCC, but could have done better in these austere times.
