LETTER: Councillor is right to be concerned

I am a member of Frack Free Ryedale, a community group set up in 2014 after seismic surveys in the Vale of Pickering alerted us to the threat of fracking.

We have a ‘live’ site, and associated protection camp, at Kirby Misperton. We also have several INEOS licence blocks in our part of North Yorkshire, so we are watching the unfolding events in Derbyshire with great concern.

Fracking is a complex technical process.

Councillor Barry Lewis is quite right to object to INEOS denying local people the opportunity of having the future of their community decided at a local level. This could set a dangerous precedent for all kinds of planning applications, affecting communities all over the UK.

INEOS already has form in this type of situation, threatening the National Trust with legal action to force seismic surveys on its land.

Your readers must support Councillor Lewis’s objection, and fight tooth and nail to keep this decision at a local level.
